Words are made up of letters. These letters are either consonants or vowels. Let’s learn how to recognize them!
Consonants and Vowels
- Vowels:
There are 5 vowels in the alphabet: A, E, I, O, U.
Sometimes Y can also be a vowel.
Example: In the word “cat,” the vowel is A. - Consonants:
The other letters in the alphabet that are not vowels are called consonants.
There are 21 consonants: B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z.
Example: In the word “cat,” the consonants are C and T.
Recognizing Words and Sounds
- Example: The word “dog” starts with the sound “d.”
Picture Word Match
You can look at a picture and figure out the word that matches.
Example: If you see a picture of an apple, the word is “apple.”
Identifying Consonants in Words
Look at the letters in the word and pick out the ones that are consonants.
Example: In the word “ball,” the consonants are B, L, and L.
Counting Vowels in Words
Look at the word and count how many vowels (A, E, I, O, U) you can find.
