What is Purpose and Topic?
What is Purpose?
Purpose is the reason why someone writes something. Authors write for different reasons, and knowing the purpose helps us understand the text better. Some common reasons for writing include:
- To inform: This means giving facts or information about a subject, like in a book about animals.
- To entertain: This means telling a fun story or creating a narrative, like in a fairy tale.
- To persuade: This means trying to convince the reader to think or act in a certain way, like in an advertisement.
What is Topic?
The topic is the main subject or idea that the text is about. It tells us what the writing focuses on. For example, in a book about dolphins, the topic is dolphins.
Identifying Topic and Purpose
When you read a text, you can find the topic and purpose by asking yourself:
- What is the main idea of the text? (This is the topic.)
- Why did the author write this text? (This is the purpose.)
Examples
- In a book about space, the topic is space, and the purpose might be to inform readers about planets and stars.
- In a story about friendship, the topic is friendship, and the purpose might be to entertain readers with a fun tale.
