Lesson: Word Problems with Multiplication
Multiplication is useful for solving real-world problems. In this lesson, we will learn how to use multiplication to solve word problems about different situations, like farms, toy stores, and supermarkets.
Multiply with Farm Animals
Imagine you are at a farm, and there are groups of animals. To find out how many animals there are in total, we can multiply.
- Example: If there are 4 pens and each pen has 5 sheep, how many sheep are there?
We can multiply: 4 x 5 = 20 sheep.
Multiply with a Toy Store
In a toy store, we can use multiplication to find out how many toys there are in total when there are several shelves with the same number of toys.
- Example: If a toy store has 3 shelves and each shelf holds 6 toy cars, how many toy cars are there?
We can multiply: 3 x 6 = 18 toy cars.
Multiply with Supermarkets
At the supermarket, multiplication helps us figure out how many items are on the shelves.
- Example: If a shelf has 7 rows of cans, and each row has 4 cans, how many cans are on the shelf?
We can multiply: 7 x 4 = 28 cans.
Multiply with a Classroom
In a classroom, multiplication can help us figure out how many students there are when desks are arranged in rows.
- Example: If a classroom has 5 rows of desks, and each row has 4 desks, how many desks are there in total?
We can multiply: 5 x 4 = 20 desks.
Multiply with a Library
In a library, we can use multiplication to find out how many books are on the shelves.
- Example: If a library has 6 shelves, and each shelf has 8 books, how many books are there?
We can multiply: 6 x 8 = 48 books.
