Lesson: Number Place Value
Place value is the value of a digit based on its position in a number. Understanding place value helps us read and write large numbers and understand how numbers work.
Understanding Place Value
Each digit in a number has a place, and the place tells us how much that digit is worth.
- Ones place: This is where single digits (1-9) are found.
Example: In the number 45, the 5 is in the ones place. - Tens place: This shows how many groups of ten are in the number.
Example: In the number 45, the 4 is in the tens place, which means 40. - Hundreds place: This tells us how many groups of one hundred are in the number.
Example: In the number 345, the 3 is in the hundreds place, which means 300.
Each place increases by ten times as we move left (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on).
Place Value Matching
When we match digits to their place values, we break the number down.
- Example: In the number 752, the 7 is in the hundreds place (700), the 5 is in the tens place (50), and the 2 is in the ones place (2).
Place Value Exploration
We can explore place value by building numbers from digits. Understanding that a number like 632 means 600 + 30 + 2 is key to knowing how place value works.
Place Value Mastery
To master place value, practice breaking down numbers and building them back up.
For example, if you have the number 824:
- The 8 is in the hundreds place (800),
- The 2 is in the tens place (20),
- The 4 is in the ones place (4).
