What is Rhyming?
Rhyming happens when two or more words sound the same at the end. Rhyming words are fun and help make poems, songs, and stories sound great!


Rhyming Words Identification

  • How to Identify Rhyming Words:
    Listen to the ending sounds of the words. If the sounds are the same, they rhyme!
  • Examples:
    • Cat and hat rhyme because they both end with “-at.”
    • Blue and shoe rhyme because they both end with “-ue.”

Rhyming Words Fill-in-the-Blanks

  • Practice with Rhyming Words:
    Sometimes, you can finish a sentence by finding the rhyming word that fits.
  • Example:
    • “I see a hat, on top of the ____.”
      The word that rhymes is cat!

Odd One Out

  • Finding the Word that Doesn’t Rhyme:
    Sometimes, you’ll have a list of words, but one won’t rhyme with the others.
  • Example:
    • Which word doesn’t rhyme?
      Dog, frog, car.
      • Answer: Car doesn’t rhyme because it doesn’t end with the same sound as “dog” and “frog.”

Rhyming Word Creation

  • Making Up Your Own Rhyming Words:
    You can practice creating new rhyming words by thinking of words that end the same way.
  • Example:
    • Think of a word that rhymes with “sun”.
      Some rhyming words are: fun, run, bun.
